Pure form with function: the Outlaw Racers 356

Ultimate Dubs 2024 was one for the books. By now you’ve probably seen it Mario’s main event story and its spotlight on a hit Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16, sublime Mk1 Volkswagen Golfand stunning Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 recreation. If not, I recommend you check them all out.

Today I want to share one of my highlights from the show: a car that has been around for a few years, but continues to impress and inspire wherever it goes. James Rudlands Outlaw racers Porsche 356 Coupe.

James’ car, a 356 like no other, with a fiberglass body draped over a T1-based chassis, shows tremendous attention to detail.

When creating this Outlaw-style 356, James didn’t rush the design process. He meticulously planned every stage of the build, using his visual skills as a professional photographer to produce something that stands out in a sea of other Porsche builds and looks interesting from all angles.

From the moment James had the vision, there was no stopping him. Customized from front to back and top to bottom, his 356 Outlaw is a true statement piece.

The bodywork was entrusted to Specialist Paintworks, who captured the custom green hue. It’s not a color you’d normally associate with an Outlaw Porsche model – they’re often silver or black – but it works so well.

From the yellow headlights with chrome-plated stone chip protectors to the gold-centered wheels, every detail has been taken into account.

Speaking of wheels, Gekrenzert in Germany took care of their custom rebuild. Starting with the French-made Tramont TY-1 centers, specs now read 16 x 5.5-inch ET43 at the front without lips, and 16 x 6.6-inch ET30 at the rear with stepped lips.

The whole look is brought together by a custom-made suspension from EvaResto. An Air Ride system is used together with a narrowed beam Air lift performance Management ensures that the 356 can lie exactly on its stomach.

It’s still low on ride height, but it soaks up bumps with ease. That is also important, because there is a red-hot engine in the back.

The 2,276cc Volkswagen engine built by Herbert Performance Company in Nevada, USA, features Superflow cylinder heads, an SLR XR310 cam and modified 44mm IDF carburetors. All told, the flat-four is good for 180 horsepower, which is a lot for this small, lightweight coupe. Backing up is a Pro-Street swing-axle gearbox with a 3.88 ratio.

That leaves the interior, which has also been completely customized. SJ Bowles Coach Trimming is responsible for much of the work, and sumptuous diamond-stitched leather upholstery can be found around the cabin, frunk fuel tank and even the engine compartment.

I love the raw aluminum seats, which before being converted for use in this build with custom leather seat cushions had a different life in a Westland Lynx military helicopter.

The dual Breitling stopwatches are also a stylish touch, as are the custom steering wheel.

When this 356 isn’t turning heads and winning awards at numerous car shows, you can sometimes spot it racking up the miles on British roads – something James wants to do more of this year.

Looking back on the build and show appearances, a favorite moment that stands out to James was when his Outlaw 356 won one of the 10 top prizes in the 2023 Risenation Hall Of Fame. Every year that event attracts some of the best modified show cars in Europe, so winning is a true testament to the thought, work and attention to detail that has gone into this stunning build.
